Suffolks
New Zealand Suffolk
Why did we choose New Zealand Suffolks?
We wanted a breed of sheep which could perform well of a grass based system, have reduced costs and reduced labour input especially at lambing time. We believe the New Zealand Suffolk and their offspring provide these benefits
Benefits of using a New Zealand Suffolk Ram
– New Zealand Suffolk rams and ram lambs are keen to work, Ram lambs can easily serve 40+ ewes, mature rams 100+ ewes.
– Can be used on all other ewe breeds – Suitable for use on ewe lambs
– Longevity: often live 6-8 years or more – There are fewer problems at lambing so reducing labour requirement
– Prolific – our pure bred suffolks scan over 185%, crossbreds can san over 200%
New Zealand Suffolk Rams sire lambs which are :
– Easily born due to their wedge shape and fine shoulders – Good will to live
– Vigorous with lots of “get up and go” – Quick get up and suck
– Hardy, ideal for outdoor lambing – Thrive well and finish off grass
New Zealand Suffolk Rams can be used as Terminal or Maternal Sires
– Crossbred ewes make excellent mothers – Crossbred ewes maintain their condition on a grass based system
– Crossbred females are prolific scanning up to 200% – Crossbred females are very maternal
– Crossbred females have bigger pelvises so less difficulties at lambing
